Viscoelastic relaxation of insoluble monomolecular films

چکیده
2014 Glycerol mono-oleate monolayers at the air-water interface have been investigated by quasielastic light scattering from thermally excited capillary waves over a wide range of wave numbers. Using a relatively novel data analysis procedure four surface viscoelastic properties were deduced ab initio from the light scattering data : surface elastic moduli and viscosities governing shear normal to the monolayer (~ tension) and dilation in the film plane. The tension and dilational modulus were compared with classical, equilibrium values in the first rigorous comparison of its kind. Various effects suggested that the two moduli were affected by rather different relaxation processes : discrepancies between the light scattering and equilibrium values of the two elastic moduli occurred in different states of the monolayer, and the two surface viscosities (both zero for the clean subphase) behaved very differently on monolayer compression. These effects were observed to be frequency dependent. In the fully compressed monolayer state the transverse shear modulus was characterised by an exponential relaxation, of time scale ~ 9 03BCs. This relaxation time fell exponentially on monolayer expansion, reaching 100 ns for molecular areas ~ 60 Å2. Slower processes than these were rigorously excluded. The dilational modulus was generally less well determined than that affecting transverse shear. However in the expanded monolayer state, the data sufficed to demonstrate much slower relaxation, 03C4 ~ 290 03BCs. Possible molecular mechanisms are briefly discussed. J. Phys. Slip vs. viscoelasticity in dewetting thin films.
Ultrathin polymer films on non-wettable substrates display dynamic features which have been attributed to either viscoelastic or slip effects. Here we show that in the weak- and strong-slip regime, effects of viscoelastic relaxation are either absent or essentially indistinguishable from slip effects. Strong slip modifies the fastest unstable mode in a rupturing thin film, which questions the s...
متن کاملCapillary wave dynamics on supported viscoelastic films: single and double layers.
We study the capillary wave dynamics of a single viscoelastic supported film and of a double layer of immiscible viscoelastic supported films. Using both simple scaling arguments and a continuum hydrodynamic theory, we investigate the effects of viscoelasticity and interfacial slip on the relaxation dynamics of these capillary waves. Our results account for the recent observation of a wavelengt...
متن کاملA Nano-indentation Identification Technique for Viscoelastic Constitutive Characteristics of Periodontal Ligaments
Introduction: Nano-indentation has recently been employed as a powerful tool for determining the mechanical properties of biological tissues on nano and micro scales. A majority of soft biological tissues such as ligaments and tendons exhibit viscoelastic or time-dependent behaviors. The constitutive characterization of soft tissues is among very important subjects in clinical medicine and espe...
متن کاملTime-Dependent Behavior of Insoluble Monomolecular Films: Fatty Acids and Some Derivatives
Saturated fatty acids ranging from 15 to 20 carbons in Mkyl chain length and some stearic acid derivatives were spread as insoluble monomoleeular films and compressed at a constant velocity. As these surface films assume close packing, they exhibit a loss in surface pressure when held at constant area below an apparent collapse pressure which is not due to dissolution into the subphase solution...
متن کاملMixed monomolecular films of chlorophyll and cytochromes.
Mixed monomolecular films of cytochrome (Cyt) and chlorophyll (Chl) were spread at a nitrogen-water interface. A large interaction is observed between reduced Cyt f and Chl a in a mixed film. Oxidized Cyt f and Chl a in a mixed film show little evidence for interaction. Mixed monomolecular films of Chl a with either reduced or oxidized Cyt c appears to result in denaturation of the protein at t...
